RAMALLAH, September 12, 2026 (WAFA) — Fatah's Revolutionary Council said the movement plans to participate in the upcoming Palestinian legislative elections through an official list in consultation with factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization, saying the move would protect the national project, broaden political partnership and reaffirm the Palestinian people's role as the source of legitimacy and decision-making.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of its first session, dubbed the "Steadfastness and Resilience Session" and held under the chairmanship of President Mahmoud Abbas, the council said protecting Palestinians is at the heart of national action at this stage.
The council stressed the Palestinian people's right to defend themselves and exercise their right to legitimate peaceful popular resistance.
It said the current national emergency requires serious and comprehensive national dialogue to achieve national unity involving all Palestinian factions and components, and to restore unity within the framework of the PLO in a manner that serves the higher national interest.
The council also stressed the political and geographic unity of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, saying that protecting Palestinians and confronting settlement activity are both Fatah and national responsibilities.
On the political level, the council described elections as a national and legal entitlement aimed at strengthening Palestinian legitimacy and realizing the right to self-determination through a fully sovereign Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders.
The council also placed the issue of Palestinian prisoners, along with political, legal and popular efforts to defend them, among the highest national priorities. It called for action through international forums to secure their release, particularly Fatah Central Committee member Marwan Barghouti and Revolutionary Council member Jamal Hweil.
Fatah said it would continue to lead the Palestinian people toward ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. It also reaffirmed its commitment to the PLO in its legal capacity as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
