Arab League calls for international protection for Palestinians on 78th anniversary of the Nakba

CAIRO, May 14, 2026 (WAFA) – The Arab League called for international protection for the Palestinian people and urged the international community to compel Israel to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian land, including East Jerusalem, implement the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice regarding the illegality of the occupation, and provide compensation for resulting damages.

In a statement marking the 78th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, the League’s Sector for Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories stressed the need to end the historic injustice against the Palestinian people and continue international efforts toward ending Israeli occupation of territories occupied since 1967 and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the two-state solution, international law, and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The statement said this year’s commemoration comes amid the continuing war in the Gaza Strip and escalating Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. It also criticized settlement expansion, forced displacement, attacks by colonists, and policies targeting Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The Arab League further warned against efforts to undermine the work of UNRWA, emphasizing the agency’s vital role in supporting Palestinian refugees and calling for sustainable funding free from political pressure.
