OIC reaffirms Palestinian rights on 78th anniversary of the Nakba

JEDDAH, May 15, 2026 (WAFA) – The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Friday reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights on the 78th anniversary of the Nakba.

In a statement marking the occasion, the OIC recalled the events of 1948 following the establishment of Israel, which involved organized terrorism, genocide, ethnic cleansing, forced displacement, the destruction of hundreds of Palestinian towns and villages, and the confiscation of Palestinian land and property.

The organization warned of the continued consequences of the Nakba, which it said are renewed daily through colonial settlement expansion, the Judaization of Jerusalem, attacks on holy sites, attempts to alter their historical and legal status, systematic killing, ongoing military aggression, and the withholding of Palestinian tax revenues.

The OIC said the Nakba remains alive in the collective memory of the Islamic nation and the wider world, describing it as a dark mark on the conscience of humanity, a setback for the values of freedom and justice, and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The organization reaffirmed the right of Palestinian refugees to return and receive compensation in accordance with United Nations Resolution 194, while expressing absolute rejection of any measures targeting the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, which it said aim to eliminate the refugee issue.

It renewed its call on the international community to provide political, legal, and financial support to UNRWA.

The OIC also urged the international community to assume its responsibilities in achieving international justice, ending the Israeli occupation and settlement activities, providing international protection for the Palestinian people, and supporting their steadfastness on their land.

The statement reiterated support for Palestinians’ right to self-determination, return, and the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
