Newspapers Review: Abbas in New York says annexation of Palestinian land ends agreements

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, September 24, 2019 (WAFA) – Statements by President Mahmoud Abbas in New York in which he said that he will not accept Israeli annexation of any Palestinian land and that such annexation would end all the signed agreements were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today, particularly al-Hayat al-Jadida.

The paper quoted Abbas saying that contacts with the US administration are still on hold until the latter changes its hostile positions toward the Palestinian cause and respect United Nations resolutions.

Al-Ayyam reported on the meeting President Abbas had with world leaders in New York, but its main front page story focused on the large-scale Israeli arrest of Palestinians yesterday in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank. It also said Palestinians clashed with Israeli soldiers in al-Bireh, Beit Ummar and Deir Nitham.

Al-Quds, which also reported on the clashes and Israeli arrests, focused in its main front page story on efforts to form the new Israeli government, particularly the meeting between the heads of the Likud and Blue-White parties with the Israeli president.

It quoted Arab-Israeli lawmaker Ahmad Tibi saying that his party recommended the Blue-White leader, Benny Gantz, to form the government in order to get rid of the Likud leader, Benjamin Netanyahu.

The paper said an Israeli court ordered the eviction of a Palestinian family from its home in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan and ordered turning the home over to Jewish settlers.

It said in another story that the Israeli District Court rejected a petition to allow members of Khadamat Rafah football team to leave Gaza to the West Bank to play the final cup game, which means the game will not be held.

Al-Ayyam said eight Palestinian factions in Gaza have made a proposal to end the intra-Palestinian division.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying China has always stood by the Palestinian cause.
