"Cannot ignore ongoing genocide, humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza," says Spanish Foreign Minister

CAIRO, May 17, 2025 (WAFA) - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that what's happening in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank cannot be turned a blind eye, not in Europe or anywhere else.

He added that the war on Gaza left nearly 50,000 killed, 100,000 wounded, and two million displaced. These are staggering and unacceptable numbers that violate not only the basic concept of humanity but also the fundamental principles of international and humanitarian law."

Sánchez stressed the need to "end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and allow access to aid. We are working in coordination with the United Nations to succeed in passing a resolution in the UN General Assembly to deliver aid."

He called for increased pressure on Israel to stop the massacre in Gaza, using all international means available under international law.

The Spanish PM announced that his country would submit a proposal to the UN General Assembly regarding Israel's compliance with its international obligations to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

He also called for exploring the full range of legal means available to hold Israel accountable. Adding, "We must move forward to achieve peace and hold a peace conference."

Sánchez emphasized, "We must reach a two-state solution through the recognition of the State of Palestine. The international forum can be an opportunity for Arab-European consensus for joint action that unites the international community in support of Palestine."
