Arab League backs Palestine’s bid to lead 81st UN General Assembly session

BAGHDAD, May 18, 2025 (WAFA) – The Arab League Council, meeting at the summit level in Baghdad, has officially endorsed the State of Palestine's candidacy for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for the 2026–2027 term.

In a resolution adopted during the summit, the Council expressed full support for the nomination of Palestine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, to assume the presidency of the General Assembly. 

The decision also calls on all Arab states to intensify diplomatic efforts with friendly nations to rally support for this nomination.

Furthermore, the Council requested the Secretary-General of the Arab League to follow up on the implementation of the resolution and coordinate efforts to ensure the success of Palestine's bid.
