Ramadan ends, Friday Eid al-Fitr; president sends congratulations

JERUSALEM, June 14, 2018 (WAFA) – The Mufti of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein announced on Thursday the end of the holy fast month of Ramadan in Palestine, which means that Friday is the first day of the three-day Eid al-Fitr holiday.

"The crescent of the month of Shawwal was seen tonight, which means that tomorrow, Friday, June 15, 2018, is the first day of Eid al-Fitr," the Mufti announced from Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated the Palestinian people on the occasion of the Eid, wishing "to our people to revisit this occasion while their wishes for freedom, independence and the establishment of their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital have come true."

He urged the Palestinian people to keep the celebration to religious rituals "due to the difficult conditions our people are living," in apparent reference to the situation in the Gaza Strip and the large number of Palestinians killed and wounded over the past two months from Israeli army gunfire.

The president wished speedy recovery to the wounded and quick release for the prisoners.

Several Arab and Muslim countries have also announced the end of Ramadan.
