Mufti warns of Israel’s ban on call for prayer as US moves embassy to Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, May 13, 2018 (WAFA) – The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine Sheikh Mohammad Hussein warned on Sunday about Israel’s intention to ban the Muslim call for prayer in Jerusalem on Monday in conjunction with the US’ scheduled relocation of its embassy in Israel to the occupied city of Jerusalem.

“This racist decision is very dangerous and violates all heavenly and international laws and norms that guarantee the freedom of worship,” Sheikh Hussein said in a press statement.

Hussein continued, “It is ironic that a decision is made to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem on the 70th anniversary of Nakba (catastrophe) of the true and legitimate owners [Palestinians] of the land.”

On Saturday, Israeli media sources said Israeli police was looking into banning the Muslim call for prayers in mosques in occupied East Jerusalem in conjunction with the US relocation of its embassy in Israel to the city on May 14.

The National and Islamic Forces, a coalition of major Palestinian factions, has called for a public strike and for mass protests across the occupied West Bank and Gaza on the same day to reject the US move.
