RAMALLAH, July 17, 2017 (WAFA) – The installation of metal detectors by Israel at the entrances to East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound dominated the front page headlines in local Palestinian dailies on Monday.
The three dailies reported Israel installed metal detectors at two of the compound’s gates, namely Lions’ Gate (Bab al-Asbat) and the Council Gate (Bab al-Majlis).
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Palestinians and Islamic Endowment (Waqf) officials refused to enter the holy site through the metal detectors.
Al-Ayyam added worshippers who came to pray were forced to perform prayers at the closest points to the mosque.
It added Israeli police pushed back a procession carrying the body of a deceased man and prevented them from performing funeral prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestinian officials held a meeting to discuss recent Israeli measures in Jerusalem’s Old City and the mosque compound.
They reported deputy chairman of Fatah Mahmoud al-Aloul, who presided over the meeting, stating President Mahmoud Abbas was contacting world leaders in order to defuse Israeli measures at Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem.
Al-Quds added the attendees formed an emergency committee to follow-up and confront the Israeli measures.
The dailies also reported Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man and injured and detained another during an overnight raid into Nabi Saleh village, northwest of Ramallah.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added the slain Palestinian was identified as 34-year-old Ammar Khalil from the nearby village of Kafr Ein.
Al-Quds added Israeli forces conducted multiple raids across Hebron and Bethlehem districts in the southern West Bank, triggering clashes with Palestinians.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli settlers set up several structures on lands belonging to the Palestinian village of al-Khader, south of Bethlehem.
The dailies spotlighted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
The dailies reported Macron called on Netanyahu to resume Israeli-Palestinian peace talks on the basis of a two-state solution.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said Macron called on Netanyahu to halt settlement construction in the West Bank.
The three dailies reported the Israeli ministerial committee for legislation approved a bill that prohibits the division of Jerusalem in any future peace deal with the Palestinians.
They also reported President Mahmoud Abbas stating Palestinians highly appreciate China’s Belt and Road Initiative in which they form a part of the plan.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli camps popped up in Israel and West Bank settlements offering Jewish American tourists a chance to pretend-kill Palestinians.
