THE VATICAN, May 18, 2025 (WAFA) – The Vatican witnessed a historic moment on Sunday as Pope Leo XIV was officially inaugurated as the first-ever American pope during a special Mass at St. Peter's Square. The ceremony was attended by world leaders, royal figures, and thousands of believers.
Among the global dignitaries present were U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, along with other notable figures.
Tens of thousands participated in the celebration, which was secured by extensive security measures, including the deployment of thousands of security personnel to ensure the safety of the event.
Pope Leo XIV, 69, is a former cardinal from Chicago who served in various South American countries. Holding both U.S. and Peruvian citizenship, his election marks a symbol of bridging the Americas and the global Church.
