GAZA, January 5, 2017 (WAFA) –After Israeli navy had opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats off Gaza shore on Thursday that caused one fisherman to be declared missing after his boat was hit, Gaza’s fishermen have declared a two-day strike in protest against the Israeli attacks against them, according to local sources.
The fishermen said they were fed up with Israeli interference in their fishing rights off Gaza shores and therefore have declared a two-day strike to protest these measures and draw attention to their plight.
They said the Israeli navy fights them in every way possible to prevent them from making a living.
Meanwhile, search for the missing fisherman was still ongoing in Gaza, said the sources.
The 1993 Oslo agreement between Israel and the Palestinians allowed Gaza fishermen to sail 20 nautical miles in the sea.
However, Israel over the years unilaterally reduced this area to six nautical miles but often would not allow the fishermen to exceed three nautical miles, which fisherman say is not enough to catch fish.
