Official: President’s intervention secured detainees’ end of hunger strike

RAMALLAH, September 21, 2016 (WAFA) – Three Palestinian detainees who have been on hunger strike for over 70 days ended their strike following an intervention from President Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission Issa Qaraqi said on Wednesday.

He said that the brothers, Muhammad and Mahmoud Balboul, and Malik Qadi, agreed to end their hunger strike and will be released at the end of their current detention period after Israel said it will not renew their administrative detention.

“As a result of political efforts by President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership and intense efforts on all levels to find a solution to the prisoners who went on hunger strike to protest their administrative detention,” said Qaraqi, it was agreed to have the prisoners released.

Qadi will be released on Thursday after he completes his four-month detention period and the Balboul brothers will be released on December 8, said Qaraqi.

The three prisoners are currently in hospital following serious deterioration in their health.
