Fatal Shooting of Palestinian Minor, Funeral of 3 Killed Palestinians Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 6, 2016 (WAFA) - The fatal shooting of a Palestinian boy by Israeli forces in Halhul town, north of Hebron, and the funeral procession of three Palestinians who were shot dead by the Israeli army, after they carried a stabbing and gun attack in Jerusalem hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported that a Palestinian boy was shot dead by Israeli forces in Halhul. Both al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida described the boy’s killing as assassination.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that Israeli forces also shot and injured the killed boy’s cousin.

It is worth mentioning that Israeli forces opened fire on Haitham al-Baw, 14, and his cousin, Wajdi, killing Haitham and injuring the latter purportedly for attempting to throw Molotov cocktails at passing Israeli vehicles near Halhul.

Furthermore, the dailies reported that a large crowd of Palestinians attended the funeral procession of three killed Palestinians in Qabatiya.

It is worth noting in this regard that Ahmad Zakarneh, Mohammad Kamil and Najeh Abu al-Rub, all in their 20s, were shot dead by Israeli forces last Wednesday following a stabbing and gun attack that claimed the life of an Israeli female soldier and wounded another in Jerusalem.

Highlighting the situation in the northern West Bank town of Qabatiya, the hometown of the three Palestinian assaulters, al-Quds reported that the town remains under siege.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted in this regard ongoing clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the town and noted that a soldier was injured. Al-Ayyam reported that that dozens of Palestinians were injured during the clashes.

The dailies also reported that Israeli forces handed demolition notices to the family houses of seven Palestinians, who were either  shot dead or detained by Israeli forces in Qalandiya, Nablus and Hebron.

Regarding rallies held in support of hunger striking detainee, journalist Mohammad al-Qiq, across the West Bank, al-Quds reported that dozens of Palestinians were shot and injured as Israeli forces suppressed the rallies.

Highlighting the latest developments regarding efforts to bring about intra-Palestinian reconciliation, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Fatah-Hamas reconciliation meetings are scheduled to start today in Doha. 

Highlighting latest Israeli settlement plans, al-Quds revealed that Israel plans to build a new settlement “neighborhood” on a 10-dunum-area land leased from the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem in Abu Tur.

The three dailies highlighted calls by Save Jewish Jerusalem, a new settler movement, with the purpose of building a wall that would surround and separate 28 Palestinian towns and villages from Jerusalem city.

Highlighting the findings of an opinion poll, both al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the majority of Israelis are in favor of a “unilateral disengagement” from Palestinians in the West Bank.

Al-Quds explained that this move would effectively revoke the residency status of 200,000 Palestinians in Jerusalem district.

Al-Quds reported on a Palestinian official as saying that several Arab capitals warned Hamas against Israeli preparations to launch an onslaught on Gaza.

Highlighting recent statements by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Middle East conflict, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Ban as stating that he feels “ashamed” and “guilty” over stalled Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Ban was quoted in al-Qudsd as stating:  “Palestinians — especially young people — are losing hope over what seems a harsh, humiliating and endless occupation.”

Both al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted an Israeli incitement campaign against Palestinian members of the Knesset who have visited the families of Palestinians killed in Jerusalem in recent months for being suspected of carrying out attacks against Israeli targets.
