Gaza Eye Hospital reports surge in vision loss cases amid ongoing blockade and shelling

GAZA, July 21, 2025 (WAFA) – Dr. Abdel Salam Sabah, Director of the Eye Hospital in Gaza, reported nearly 1,200 new cases of complete or partial vision loss over the past two weeks in Gaza City and the Al-Nasr neighborhood alone.

Speaking to Voice of Palestine, Dr. Sabah said approximately 1,500 cases of total or partial blindness have been recorded  due to direct eye injuries and others experiencing progressive vision loss due to chronic illnesses that have worsened because of the lack of proper medical care.

He warned that between 4,000 and 5,000 patients who regularly visited the Eye Hospital before the war are now without follow-up or treatment, placing them at serious risk of losing their sight.

He emphasized that severe malnutrition leads to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which weaken the optic nerves and increase the likelihood of gradual or permanent vision impairment , especially among diabetic patients.

Since March 2, 2025, the occupying forces have completely  closed all crossings with the Gaza Strip and prevented the entry of food and medical aid, causing widespread famine within the Strip.

Israel’s ongoing aggression  on the Gaza Strip — which began on October 7, 2023 — has so far resulted in the killing  of 58,895 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children, and injuries to 140,980 others
