Newspaper Review: Fatal Shooting of Three Palestinians Following Gun, Knife Assault in Jerusalem Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 4, 2016 (WAFA) – Shooting three Palestinians dead by Israeli police after they fatally wounded a police officer and injured another in a gun and knife assault outside Damascus Gate entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported that three Palestinians from the Jenin town of Qabatiya were shot dead after they carried out a stabbing and gun attack that claimed the life of an Israeli female soldier and wounded another in Jerusalem.

The three dailies highlighted the reprisal measures taken by Israeli military following the attack.

They reported that Israeli forces imposed cordon around Qabatiya, home to the three Palestinian assaulters, deployed large troops across the West Bank and stepped up detention operations.

Furthermore, the dailies highlighted other detentions by Israeli forces across the West Bank (WB).

Al-Quds reported that detention raids were carried out across the WB and four Gaza fishermen were detained.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that Israeli forces announced that they detained a Palestinian girl who had gone missing three days ago in Halhul.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Israeli occupation authorities demolished a car repair workshop in the Palestinian town of al-‘Issawiya, north of Jerusalem. Al-Quds added that a Palestinian was forced to dismantle by himself a an additional room in his Jerusalem house.

Al-Ayyam reported that dozens of Israeli soldiers and settlers forced their way into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and that they were confronted by Palestinian worshippers.

Al-Quds noted in this regard that a total of 130 Palestinian Muslim worshippers are barred from entering the mosque compound.

Furthermore, highlighting President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with family of Palestinian hunger striking detainee Mohammad al-Qiq, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported him as pledging to spare no effort to secure releasing the bodies of Palestinians shot dead for being suspected/ involved in stabbing attacks in Jerusalem.

Covering the health situation of al-Qiq, who is being hospitalized in Afula hospital following his 72 consecutive day of hunger strike and rapid health deterioration, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli occupation authorities decided to forcibly treat al-Qiq.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida explained that this decision was taken preemptively before a court hearing scheduled today.

Highlighting the latest developments regarding efforts to bring about intra-Palestinian reconciliation, al-Quds reported that a large Fatah delegation traveled to Cairo in preparation for the reconciliation meeting with Hamas, scheduled to take place in Doha.

It also reported that US Department of State has advocated Palestinians’ right to peaceful protests against Israeli occupation.

It also reported that the PLO Executive Committee would convene Thursday to discuss the French bid to resume deadlock Middle East peace talks.

Al-Ayyam reported Hamas sources as revealing that they arrested a serious collaborator who had been collaborating with Israel for 14 years and taken part in several assassinations.
