RAMALLAH, January 18, 2016 (WAFA) – The fatal shooting of a Palestinian by Israeli forces at Huwwara checkpoint, south of Nablus, following an alleged stabbing attempt together with the fatal stabbing of an Israeli settler in the Hebron illegal settlement of Otniel hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.
The three dailies reported that a Palestinian young man was shot dead by Israeli forces at Huwwara checkpoint.
Al-Quds added that the man came from the Nablus village of Masliya, while al-Ayyam described his killing as ‘assassination’.
The three dailies also reported that an Israeli female settler was stabbed to death to the south of Hebron.
Al-Quds added in this regard that a manhunt is underway. It reported on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as pledging that the suspected Palestinian “terrorist” would pay the full price.
Al-Ayyam reported in this regard that Israeli forces cordoned off the Hebron towns of al-Samou‘ and Adh-Dhahiriya, blocked the road leading to the Nablus settlement of Yitzhar and Huwwara checkpoint, and deployed heavily between the northern West Bank cities of Nablus and Tulkarem.
Furthermore, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli forces detained a Palestinian girl in Hebron purportedly for possessing a knife. Al-Hayat al-Jadida noted that the girl was detained in a shameful manner.
Furthermore, the anti-Christian graffiti sprayed on the walls of the Dormition Abbey in East Jerusalem hit the front page headlines in the dailies.
The three dailies reported that Jewish extremists sprayed anti-Christian graffiti on the walls of the Jerusalem monastery.
Al-Ayyam explained that the Jewish extremists desecrated the church walls, scrawling graffiti against Jesus Christ and calling for the killing of Christians.
It is worth noting in this regard that threats were scrawled in the Hebrew language, reading “Kill the Christians, the enemy of Israel", "The revenge is coming very soon," as well as "Send Christians to hell.”
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Israeli occupation authorities banned a cultural event at the Palestinian National Theater, known as El-Hakawati, in Jerusalem.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted a Palestinian protest in solidarity with hunger striking detainee Mohammad al-Qiq near Ofer detention center, southwest of Ramallah.
They reported that Israeli forces suppressed the non-violent protest in solidarity with al-Qiq, whose health condition is very critical.
It is worth noting in this regard that al-Qiq was the first Palestinians hunger striker to be force-fed by Israeli authorities since the enactment of the force-feeding law by the Israeli Knesset in July 2015. He launched his hunger strike more than two month ago in protest of being held in jail without a charge or trial.
Highlighting President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks during a meeting with Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, al-Quds reported on Abbas as expressing his keenness to develop historic Palestinian-Indian relations.
He was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as stressing the need for holding an international peace conference that would end political stalemate.
Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli Ministerial Committee on Legislation has approved a bill that would oblige Israeli businesses to deliver their products to the West Bank settlements.
Highlighting a pending EU draft resolution that could lead to sanctions against illegal Israeli settlements across the West Bank, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on growing Israeli concerns over this resolution.
