Newspaper Review: Funeral Procession of Four Alleged Palestinian Suspects, Weekly Friday Clashes Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, January 9, 2016 (WAFA) – The funeral procession of four Palestinians, who were killed for being suspected of carrying out stabbing attacks against Israelis, after their bodies were handed over to their families together with Friday clashes hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported that a joint funeral procession for the four Palestinians is scheduled to take place Saturday in their hometown of Sa‘ir.

Al-Ayyam added in this regard that Sa‘ir town has come under heavy Israeli restrictions in anticipation of the joint funeral procession.

Furthermore, the three dailies covered weekly Friday clashes in their main front page news articles.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that dozens of Palestinians were shot and injured during confrontations with Israeli forces across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Al-Ayyam reported in this regard that 16 Palestinians were shot and injured and dozens others suffered excessive tear gas suffocation.

Furthermore, the three dailies highlighted the killing of a Palestinian suspected of carrying out a deadly shooting attack in Tel Aviv.

The three dailies reported that Nashat Melhem was shot dead by Israeli forces in a gun battle in his hometown of ‘Ar‘ara in northern Israel. Al-Hayat al-Jadida described Nashat’s killing as assassination.

Furthermore, the three dailies highlighted the results of an opinion poll about the ‘annexation’ of West Bank by Israel. They reported that 44% of Israelis support that Israel gradually annexes the West Bank.

Highlighting a report issued by the Land Research Center, al-Quds reported that Israeli settlers are running 10 stone-cutting factories across the West Bank, noting that these factories are established on a total area of 3,500 dunums and would expand.

Highlighting the initiative pushed by Palestinian factions to broker a proposal for the reopening of Rafah border crossing with Egypt, al-Ayyam reported on Deputy Chief of Hamas’ Politburo Mousa Abu Marzouk as stating that the initiative is still vague and needs to be outlined in detail.

Responding to Abu Marzouk’s remarks, Fatah Spokesperson Osama al-Qawasmi was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as saying that Abu Marzouk’s remarks indicate Hamas’ rejection of the initiative.

Al-Quds also reported that Israeli settlers broke into and performed Talmudic rituals at the historic castle of al-Mureq west of the Hebron’s town of Dura.

Regionally, al-Ayyam reported that three tourists were injured and an armed assailant was killed in a Friday hotel attack in Egypt.
