EAST JERUSALEM, May 4, 2015 (WAFA) – Israeli
police Monday shot a Palestinian man after he purportedly attempted to stab
Israeli passers-by at a light rail station near Jerusalem’s French Hill,
reported Israeli media.
Based on the Israeli version of the incident, a
35-year-old resident of Shu‘fat refugee camp, whose identity was not revealed, sustained
light to moderate wounds after being shot in the legs and was later taken for
medical treatment at Hadassah hospital.
Israeli police said that nobody else was
injured in the purported stabbing attempt.
Israeli media reported police as
saying that an Israeli ‘security guard’ was attacked from behind by the
Palestinian, but had not known whether he had been punched or hit with a
weapon.
Other Israeli ‘security guards’
were quoted as saying that the man tried to pull something out of his pocket,
which they suspected was a knife, at which point they shot at his legs.
However, despite searching the area
and opening an investigation into the incident, police has not found any knife
at the scene.
This came ten days after Israeli
forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager at the Z‘ayyim military checkpoint to
the east of East Jerusalem.
‘Ali Abu Ghannam, 17, was shot dead
by forces stationed at the checkpoint for allegedly ‘wielding a large knife’
and attempting to stab a soldiers, but witnesses reported that it happened
following a scuffle.
Witnesses
told WAFA that Israeli soldiers stationed on the checkpoint stopped Abu
Ghannam, who was crossing the checkpoint with his sister on foot, and insulted
his sister verbally, provoking a scuffle.
Abu
Ghannam engaged in a scuffle with the soldiers after they uttered vulgar words
to his sister before he was shot dead.
