Palestinian Ministry of Education launches curriculum development initiative with UNESCO

PARIS, April 4, 2026 (WAFA) – An official delegation from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, headed by Deputy Minister Dr. Nafieh Assaf, participated in a visit to UNESCO, where they held focused technical discussions to drive forward the development of the Palestinian curriculum in line with Palestinian values, national priorities and evolving global developments.

Over an intensive, two-day workshop, organized at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, the Ministry delegation and UNESCO experts outlined the strategic priorities for curriculum development. Discussions centered on strengthening the Palestinian national capacities in curriculum design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.

This workshop forms part of a broader technical support program aimed at leveraging UNESCO’s longstanding expertise in educational development.

Proceeding from its commitment to improving the quality of education in Palestine, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has embarked on a curriculum development endeavor, based on the findings of national and international assessments. The new phase places emphasis on fostering critical and creative thinking, strengthening scientific research, developing competencies and life skills, and keeping pace with technological advancements. It also seeks to ensure alignment between curriculum content, textbook design and student assessment systems.

A joint framework for action, including a series of upcoming training workshops for national curriculum developers tailored to the Palestinian context, was agreed upon. Discussions also explored longer-term support for renewing teacher training content and competency frameworks, recognizing the essential role of teachers in achieving tangible change in learning experiences.

In parallel, the Ministry and UNESCO discussed the latter’s renewed commitments to support the Palestinian education system, including through the Gaza Virtual University Campus, and by providing temporary learning spaces, scholarships, as well as mental health and psychosocial support to Palestinian children and youth.

The meetings were attended by the Permanent Delegate of the State of Palestine to UNESCO, Dr. Adel Attia, and representatives of the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
