Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight death of a Palestinian teen a day after being shot by Israeli soldiers

RAMALLAH, Monday, July 4, 2022 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today – al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida – highlighted on their front page the death of a young Palestinian one day after being shot and critically wounded by Israeli soldiers.

They said Kamel Abdallah Alawneh, 17, a high school student who was shot and wounded during an Israeli army incursion into the northern West Bank town of Jaba, southwest of Jenin, on Saturday has died of his wounds at a Jenin hospital. He was buried yesterday in his town.

The three newspapers also reported on Israeli settlers’ assaults against Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories, including an assault on an elderly Palestinian man east of Tulkarm, as well as army incursions and raids into several West Bank towns that led to the detention of several Palestinians.

Al-Quds daily said, quoting the Israel human rights organization B’Tselem, that the settlers’ violence is supported by the army and the general intelligence, the Shabac.

Al-Ayyam daily quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying that the visit by US President Joe Biden to the region "will draw the features of another day.”

It said in a report by the Chinese news agency, Xinhua, quoting Minister of Justice Mohammad Shalaldeh saying that the Americans yesterday returned to the Palestinians the ballistic that killed the journalist Shireen Abu Akleh after testing it. The Palestinians handed over the ballistic to the Americans the day before on condition they do not turn it over to the Israelis, the accused in the murder of Abu Akleh.

Al-Quds said, in a report by AFP, that Israel will inspect the ballistic that killed Abu Akleh in American presence.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the administrative detainee in Israel, Raed Rayyan, 27, remains on hunger strike for the 88th day yesterday demanding an end to his prolonged illegal incarceration without charge or trial.

It said, based on a report by the Ministry of Health, that 2637 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Palestine during the past week.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Petroleum Authority saying the fuel crisis, which recurs every month, ended with the return of supplies to their normal level.
