RAMALLAH, Saturday, April 23, 2022 (WAFA) – The ongoing events at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem continued to occupy the front-page headlines of the Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
The main headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida daily said: “Al-Aqsa .. A place of resilience, defiance, and worship.”
It printed a picture of the Dome of the Rock with a Palestinian flag hanging on it and youths throwing stones at the Israeli police who attacked the worshippers in the morning.
It said dozens of people were injured when confronting the Israeli occupation forces who broke into Al-Aqsa Mosque to attack the worshippers.
Al-Ayyam daily said: “The occupation suppresses the worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque - injuries and arrests.”
It printed a picture showing Israeli forces carrying automatic rifles and ready to attack the worshippers, and another one showing youths throwing stones at the forces.
It also said the Israeli police used a drone to fire teargas at the worshippers at Al-Aqsa following the Friday prayer causing many suffocation cases.
The third daily, al-Quds, had two main front-page stories and said in the headline of the one on Al-Aqsa Mosque that more than 150,000 people attended the third Friday of Ramadan prayer at Al-Aqsa despite Israeli measures, while the other main front-page story was about 20-year-old Lutfi Labadi who succumbed to his wounds sustained from Israeli army gunfire during an earlier raid of the town of Maytahlon in the Jenin district in the north of the West Bank.
The paper printed a picture of Labadi and another one showing the masses of people praying at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
In another front-page story, al-Quds said an Israeli court ordered a Palestinian resident of the Old City of Jerusalem to pay settlers 275,000 Israeli shekels ($85,000) on allegation that his house blocks a view of Al-Aqsa Mosque. The deal was the Palestinian house owner, Ayed Castero, pays the money to the settlers in return for not forcing him to demolish the third floor of his house.
The paper said that Greek Orthodox Christians celebrated yesterday Easter’s Good Friday and today they will celebrate Holy Fire at the Sepulcher Church in Jerusalem’s Old City.
It said Palestinian-American NGOs rejected an Israeli decision limiting the number of Christians who will be allowed to celebrate the Holy Fire at the Sepulcher Church.
Al-Ayyam said that Washington is still committed to re-open the US consulate in Jerusalem closed during the Trump administration.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israel has been removed from the list of sponsors of the Brussels short film festival.
