Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight International Women’s Day, the corona pandemic, PM’s activities

RAMALLAH, Monday, March 08, 2021 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today highlighted different topics marking the International Women’s Day, which is celebrated today around the world, as well as the latest with the corona pandemic, particularly in Palestine, and activities of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh.

Al-Quds daily made the Women’s Day as its main front-page story, writing about the accomplishments of Palestinian women, the situation of Palestinian women in Israeli prisons, and calling for honoring them on their day.

Al-Ayyam daily highlighted the latest with the corona pandemic and said 13 people have died yesterday of the disease in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and 2264 new cases were recorded.

It said five people have died in East Jerusalem after contracting the coronavirus disease and 261 new cases were recorded over two days.

It also said the week-long lockdown imposed on some cities in the West Bank, mainly Ramallah, was strictly observed.

The third Palestinian Arabic daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, highlighted the latest news of the prime minister and quoted him saying after meeting with the Egyptian ambassador, Tareq Tayel, that Palestine prefers to buy its natural gas from Egypt rather than Israel.

The paper also said in another story quoting the Palestinian presidency condemning the latest attacks on Saudi Arabia.

It also quoted a senior official with the ruling Fatah movement, Mahmoud Aloul, saying that the Fatah list for the upcoming legislative elections will feature youths and women.

Another Fatah official, Hussein al-Sheikh, was quoted by al-Hayat al-Jadida saying that Fatah would form a national unity government if it wins the elections and the situation resulting from the previous election results in 2006 will not be repeated.

Al-Quds daily quoted Fatah officials warning member of its Central Committee, Nasser al-Qudwa, against running in a separate Fatah list, threatening that he might lose his role in the movement if he proceeds with that. The Fatah Central Committee plans to meet later today.

The paper also highlighted Israeli occupation measures against the Palestinian people and said that land was levelled in the south of the West Bank and in the Jordan Valley for settlement activities and demolition orders were issued against several Palestinian homes in a village near Bethlehem.

It also said three Gaza fishermen were killed and a fourth injured in an explosion on their boat as Israel denied any responsibility and Hamas said it was investigating it.

It said that Foreign Minister Riyad Malki plans to travel to The Hague to meet with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

Al-Ayyam said Fatah sent invitations to the Palestinian political factions to resume national dialogue in Cairo on the 16th of this month.
