Shaath: Palestine Will not Back Down from Going to UN

RAMALLAH, July 19, 2011 (WAFA) - Fatah’s Commissioner for International Relations, Nabil Shaath, affirmed Tuesday the Palestinian leadership’s determination to seek United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state next September.

Shaath said during his meetings, each separately, with The Consul General of France in Jerusalem Frédéric Desagneaux, a delegation of the German Socialist Party and with a delegation of the Mexican Socialist Party, “We are serious about going to the United Nations, and we will not back down, in light of the failure to resume negotiations and the blockage of the political process.”

He called on the European countries to recognize a Palestinian state and support the Palestinians at the UN, pointing out to the importance of the French support of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in this phase.

He also called on Europe to play a key role in this issue, especially now due to the failure of the United States (US) to pressure Israel and its preoccupation in its internal affairs.

Shaath discussed the Palestinian reconciliation and its role in the success of the Palestinian leadership’s efforts to seek UN recognition of a Palestinian state.

He also discussed the political developments with the delegation of the German Socialist Party and their intention to issue a statement that supports the Palestinians at the UN, as well as they discussed the bilateral relations between the PA and the party and ways of boosting and developing them.

In his meeting with the Mexican delegation, Shaath called on Mexico to support the Palestinians in seeking a UN admission and recognition of a Palestinian state.
