Newspapers Review: Israel demolishes Jerusalem homes; Abbas continues meeting in New York

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, September 25, 2019 (WAFA) – Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem as well as plans to demolish others and confiscation of land to expand settlements were the main front page story in two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today, while the third, al-Hayat al-Jadida, highlighted the statement President Mahmoud Abbas made in New York yesterday at the Sustainable Development meeting.

Al-Quds said Israel demolished two homes on the Mount of Olives and Silwan, two East Jerusalem Palestinian neighborhoods, and issued an order for the demolition of two homes for the Asafreh family in Beit Kahil village near the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Al-Ayyam reported on the demolitions as well as Israeli plans to seize Palestinian land in the north of the West Bank to expand its illegal settlements.

It said also that Israel intends to demolish the Abu Hmeid residence in Amari refugee camp in Ramallah which the family has rebuilt after it was demolished last year. A member of the Abu Hmeid family was responsible for dropping a slap of concrete from  rooftop on the head of Israeli soldiers who raided the camp causing the death of one soldier.

The paper also said an Israeli court is going to look again into the case of the eviction of the Sabbagh family from its home in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem for the benefit of Jewish settlers.

It also reported on the meetings of President Abbas in New York, mainly with French President Emmanuel Macron.

It said that an American technical team arrived with truckloads of equipment to Beit Hanoun/Erez crossing between Gaza and Israel in preparation to build the field hospital.

It also quoted the Qatari official Mohammad Amadi saying 50,000 impoverished families in Gaza are going to receive financial stipends tomorrow.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on these topics and also on the start of the United Nations General Assembly deliberations in New York yesterday.

It quoted Jordan’s King Abdullah saying in New York that the continuation of the Israeli occupation until today is a real moral tragedy.

Al-Quds reported on the speech of US President Donald Trump at the UN and said he avoided any mention of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

It also reported on the battle between the Israeli main parties for the premiership.
