Newspapers review: Entrenched Israeli measures at Al-Aqsa focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, July 25, 2017 (WAFA) – The entrenched measures Israeli police imposed at flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem on Monday dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds said Palestinians in East Jerusalem continued to perform prayers at public squares and roads leading to the mosque compound to express their rejection of Israeli tightened measures, including the installation of metal detectors.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Israeli police installed additional metal barriers at the Lion’s Gate (Bab al-Asbat), which leads to the mosque compound.

The three dailies added Palestinian religious and civic leaders and thousands of worshippers took the oath to preserve the mosque compound.

Al-Ayyam reported Palestinian Red Crescent medics announcing Israeli troops killed five Palestinians and injured 1,090 others since the start of the mosque crisis.

Al-Quds also reported the Israeli cabinet decided during a meeting Monday night to remove the metal detectors installed at the entrances to the mosque compound and replace them with smart inspection cameras across East Jerusalem and at the compound’s gates.

The dailies highlighted the United Nations (UN) Security Council’s closed-door meeting to discuss tensions in the mosque compound.

They reported Palestinian ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour stating the UN Security Council failed to reach a meaningful formula to stand up to Israeli arrogance in East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said United States envoy Jason Greenblatt met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and were scheduled to meet King of Jordan Abdullah II to defuse tensions in East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds reported Israeli forces opened live rounds and rubber-coated steel bullets at Palestinian protestors near Jayyous town and Hizma town, northeast of Jerusalem, seriously injuring a child and a young man.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida confirmed a Palestinian was shot and seriously injured in the head with live fire by Israeli troops during clashes in Hizma town.

They added Israeli troops also shot and injured a number of Palestinians during clashes with protestors outside the Israeli settlement of Beit El near al-Bireh city in the central West Bank.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Italy and France expressed concerns over the spiraling tension in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam added Italy underscored the need that Israel respects the longstanding status quo in the mosque compound.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said a Palestinian citizen of Israel was stabbed by a Palestinian man from Qalqiliya in the central Israeli city of Petah Tikva.

Al-Quds reported leader of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel Sheikh Raed Salah warning against Israeli settler groups’ attempts to assassinate him.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported UN Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov stating that it was extremely important that a solution to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound crisis be found by Friday.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam also covered the deadly shooting at the Israeli embassy in Amman, where an Israeli security officer killed two Jordanians.

They said all Israeli staff, including the security guard who killed the two Jordanians, arrived in Israel.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida said Fatah movement expressed dismay with the Quartet’s statement on the situation in East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
