Newspaper Review: escalating tensions in Jerusalem focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, July 23, 2017 (WAFA) – The shooting of a Palestinian youth by Israeli police during clashes in Jerusalem, and the commercial strike in the city of Jerusalem in mourning of killed Palestinians, are the highlights of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, said 23-year-old Yousef Abbas Kashur, from the town of al-Izariyeh to the east of occupied Jerusalem, was killed during clashes with Israeli police.

Al-Quds said residents of Jerusalem announced a commercial strike in mourning of the Palestinians who were killed by Israeli police as the latter violently quelled the mass demonstrations in protest of Israel’s measures and violations in the city.

The intense situation in Jerusalem continues as clashes erupt throughout the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem in protest of the metal detectors that Israeli authorities installed on al-Aqsa mosque entrances and the closure of the mosque for Muslim worshippers.

Al-Quds said Israel will consider alternatives to metal detectors.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said that dozens of Palestinians were injured during clashes with Israeli forces in several areas in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Israeli forces raided and surrounded the Ramallah-area village of Kobar, the hometown of the young man who stabbed three Israeli settlers and seriously injured a fourth after breaking into the illegal settlement of Halamish, west of Ramallah, said al-Hayat al-Jadida.

According to al-Quds, the man was driven by Israel’s actions  in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian, Israeli, Arab and international reaction to the Jerusalem tensions were also reported in the three dailies.

The United Nations is set to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Jerusalem as requested by France, Egypt and Sweden, al-Quds reported.

Tayeb Abdel Rahim, Secretary General of the Palestinian presidency, said the metal detectors should be removed as there is no Palestinian state without the city of Jerusalem.

Demonstrations also took place in Arab towns in Israel in support of Palestinians and al-Aqsa.

Al-Ayyam said hundreds demonstrated in front of the Israeli embassy in London in protest of the Israeli measures in al-Aqsa.

Abdel Aziz bin Ali al Sherif, spokesman for Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned Israel‘s serious violations against Muslim worshippers in Jerusalem, calling on the international community to promptly move to put an end to these "criminal acts."

Israeli left-wing politicians Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni called to find solutions to the current situations in Jerusalem, while opposition MK Yair Lapid defended Israel’s decision to set metal detectors on al-Aqsa.

A 17-year-old Palestinian was killed after he succumbed to critical wounds he sustained on Saturday after an Israeli remnant bomb exploded in the Tubas area, according to the three newspapers.
