Newspapers Review: UNESCO vote on Ibrahimi mosque highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, July 8, 2017 (WAFA) – The UNESCO vote on Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron, south of the West Bank, was the highlight of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

The dailies’ main front page headline that went across the front page with a picture of either the mosque or the UNESCO session covered the vote and reaction to it, with al-Hayat al-Jadida describing it as a “diplomatic victory” for the Palestinians.

The weekly Friday West Bank anti-settlements, anti-wall protests were also highlighted on the front page of the dailies, which said that several Palestinians were hurt in clashes with Israeli occupation troops from either rubber-coated metal bullets or tear gas inhalation.

Al-Ayyam said Jewish settlers attacked Palestinian property in the Jenin district in the north of the West Bank, and the Israeli occupation authorities issued 27 stop-work orders against homes and barns in the town of Yatta, in the south of the West Bank.

Al-Quds said Jewish settlers have built a synagogue on private Palestinian land in the village of al-Sawiyeh, in the north of the West Bank, and that plans are underway to build 260 housing units in the illegal settlement of Pisgat Zeev, built on occupied Palestinian land seized from Beit Hanina, north of Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam said the European Union has condemned the Israeli settlement activities, while the United States said they could be an obstacle for peace.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestine voted in favor of a UN resolution banning nuclear weapons.

It said in another story that governor of Toubas and Northern Jordan Valley and member of Fatah Revolutionary Council, Rabih Khundakji, have died due to illness. He was 57.
