Newspapers review: Security measures in Jerusalem, West Bank focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, October 3, 2016 (WAFA) – Israel police reinforcements in Jerusalem and closure of the West Bank were the main front page stories in the Palestinian dailies on Monday.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said large police reinforcements were deployed in Jerusalem for the Jewish New Year.

They said Israeli forces raided several homes in Jerusalem and across the West Bank. Al-Ayyam said Israeli police summoned a number of Palestinians from Jerusalem for interrogation.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israel decided to deny Muslim worshippers access to the Ibrahimi Mosque in the southern West Bank city of Hebron for six non-consecutive days during Jewish holidays in October.

Highlighting Palestinian electricity debt to the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC), al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Palestinian Authority (PA) paid 590 million shekels (app. $157 million) to the IEC as first payment to cover an outstanding debt.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Palestinian Finance Ministry as announcing that Israel transferred 1.180 billion shekels (app. $314 million) to the ministry in late revenues.

Furthermore, al-Ayyam said Israeli police arrested six Palestinians from the Jerusalem refugee camp of Shufat and the neighboring village of Anata allegedly for being involved with the Islamic State group (ISIS).

It said Israeli police have detained a total of 2,355 Palestinians since October 2015.

It said a total of 1,171 Israelis paid provocative tours of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the previous month.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported hundreds of Palestinians celebrated the return home of Palestinian detainee Malik Qadi, who was released from Israeli imprisonment on September 24 following 68 days of hunger strike.
