RAMALLAH, September 27, 2016 (WAFA) – The cabinet ratified Tuesday the social security law and sent it to President Mahmoud Abbas to sign it into law.
The law had provoked strong protests when it was first announced earlier this year prompting thousands of employees from the private sector to demonstrate against it.
The protests were against clauses in the law that affect their end of service severance fee and pension plan.
The cabinet withdrew the law and agreed to do an overview of its terms in consultation with various groups and organizations including lawmakers, owners of businesses and s.
The cabinet said in a statement issued at the end of its weekly meeting held in Ramallah that it has ratified the social security law and forwarded it to Abbas “after reaching an agreement on all the comments raised regarding some clauses.”
It said that once Abbas signs it into law, a board will be named to manage the new social security system.
