Israel’s Lifting of Jenin’s Town Blockade Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 7, 2016 (WAFA) – Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Sunday issue on Israel’s lifting of a three-day blockade imposed on town of Qabatiya, south of Jenin, after three of the town’s locals carried out a fatal stabbing and gun attack in Jerusalem.

It is worth noting in this regard that Ahmad Zakarneh, Mohammad Kamil and Najeh Abu al-Rub, all in their 20s, were shot dead by Israeli forces last Wednesday following a stabbing and gun attack that claimed the life of an Israeli female soldier and wounded another in Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida wrote in bold black letters: “Qabatiya’s will defeats the [Israeli] occupation”, it said in reference to Israel’s three-day blockade on the town.

Meanwhile, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that an Israeli settler was stabbed and injured on Saturday by an unidentified assailant in Rahat city, in southern Israel.

The three dailies said that the European Union called on Israel to halt the demolition of the homes of Palestinians, including EU-funded homes.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli authorities notified the family of 15-year-old Morad Ide’es, a Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jails from Yatta town, south of Hebron, about their intent to [punitively] demolish their house. To be noted, Israel accuses Ide’es of carrying out a stabbing attack in the illegal Israeli Otniel settlement, which left a settler killed.

The three dailies also reported on the significantly deteriorating health condition of Mohammad al-Qiq, a Palestinian journalist who has been on hunger strike for at least 75 days in protest of being detained by Israel without charge or trial.

Al-Quds said a Fatah delegation arrived in Doha, the Qatari capital, ahead of an expected meeting with Hamas officials in an effort to achieve a long-awaited national reconciliation.

Al-Quds said Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah blamed Israel for the security deterioration in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure Yuval Steinitz called for flooding Gaza borders with water in order to detect underground tunnels.
