Newspaper Review: Abbas Calls on African Summit to Push Toward International Conference to Revive Peace Process

RAMALLAH, January 31, 2016 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on Sunday on remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas, in which he called on the African Union Summit to push toward an international peace conference to renew the deadlocked Middle East peace process.

Al-Ayyam added that Abbas, during the 26th session of the African Union Summit (AUS) in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia, called on African countries to help create a new mechanism for peacemaking and ending the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

On a different subject, al-Hayat al-Jadida said that director of Afula hospital, where hunger striking Palestinian journalist Mohammad al-Qiq is being held, reported a significant deterioration in al-Qiq’s health, saying he has lost his ability to speak after 67 consecutive days of hunger strike against being imprisoned by Israeli authorities without a charge or trial.

Meanwhile, the three dailies reported that hundreds of Palestinians in Beit Ur at-Tihta, a village to the southwest of Ramallah, participated in the funeral procession of Ibrahim Allan, a Palestinian youth who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers on January 25, after he reportedly stabbed and injured an Israeli settler near the village.

The dailies said that two events where held concurrently in Ramallah and Gaza on Saturday to observe the International Day in support of the rights of Palestinians in the territories which Israel occupied in 1948; Israel.

Al-Ayyam said 160 Italian academics signed a petition to boycott the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion).
