NEW YORK, September 21, 2026 (WAFA) – Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy discussed with UN Secretary-General António Guterres the dangerous escalation in the region—particularly the humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip—and the rise in Israeli violations in the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem.

While participating in the high-level segment of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the Secretary-General emphasized the necessity of compelling Israel to comply with international law and international humanitarian law.

He stressed that broad international recognition of the State of Palestine requires moving toward practical steps to end the occupation and realize an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

During the meeting, Fahmy also affirmed that the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory and that any arrangements separating it from the West Bank are unacceptable.

The Secretary-General reviewed the repercussions of the regional escalation and its impact on the security and stability of the Arab region, reiterating the Arab League's solidarity with its member states in safeguarding their security, sovereignty, and the integrity of their vital infrastructure.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides underscored the importance of continued effective coordination between the two organizations on various regional and international issues, aiming to contribute to peace and stability in the Arab region and the world.
