Germany’s Left Party (Die Linke) won the Berlin state parliament election according to preliminary results, securing 24.5% of the vote, according to exit polls from polling stations, following its nomination of Elif Eralp, who is of Turkish origin, for the position of state premier.
Videos circulating online showed supporters of the Left Party chanting “Long live international solidarity, free Palestine” during celebrations following the Berlin state election.
Eralp, the party’s candidate for Berlin mayor, called for the Israeli government to be held accountable for acts of genocide committed in the Gaza Strip.
According to seat distribution projections by the ARD network, the Left Party is expected to win 42 seats in Berlin’s 159-member state parliament.
