President Abbas receives phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Carney

RAMALLAH, May 5, 2026 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday received a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

During the call, the two sides discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian Territory and regional and international issues of mutual concern, and explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations.

President Abbas extended his appreciation to the Canadian Prime Minister for Canada’s courageous positions grounded in international legitimacy and international law. He reiterated the State of Palestine and its people’s thanks to Canada for the significant recognition of the State of Palestine and its commitment to working with international partners to implement the two-state solution and halt violations of international law.

He also expressed appreciation for the humanitarian and development assistance provided by Canada.

President Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the reform agenda, including strengthening governance and transparency, advancing digital transformation, reinforcing the rule of law and security, empowering the justice sector, developing educational curricula in line with UNESCO standards, and establishing a new unified social protection system.

He expressed his confidence that the State of Palestine is moving steadily along the democratic path, elaborating that local elections had been completed, and preparations were underway for convening Fatah’s Eighth Conference.

He noted that the Palestinian National Council’s elections would be held in November, and pledged that once the appropriate conditions are in place, parliamentary and presidential elections would be held as soon as possible.

President Abbas stressed the importance of implementing the second phase of US President Trump’s peace plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803 to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire, secure a full Israeli withdrawal from the Strip, and ensure that Palestinian factions hand over their weapons, in preparation for the recovery and reconstruction phase, in accordance with the principle of one state, one law, and one legitimate weapon.

He underscored the importance of exerting pressure on Israel to halt its escalatory policies in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, stop colonial settlement expansion and annexation, end colonist violence, maintain the historical and legal Status Quo at holy sites, and release Palestinian clearance revenues, which have reached $5 billion and have negatively affected the Palestinian government’s ability to meet its obligations toward the Palestinian people.

President Abbas further emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries and peoples, and to elevate diplomatic representation in accordance with the Vienna Convention, especially following Canada’s recognition of the State of Palestine last September.

On the regional level, President Abbas renewed the State of Palestine’s condemnation of Iran’s attacks against the Gulf Arab states and Jordan, as well as Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, calling for adherence to international law and dialogue as the means to resolve disputes.

For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed his country’s commitment to working with international partners to implement the two-state solution and achieve a viable Palestinian state.

He also affirmed Canada’s keenness to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and peoples, renewing Canada’s commitment to continued support for the Palestinian people in building their institutions.

Prime Minister Carney stressed the Canadian government’s condemnation of Israeli colonial settlement activities in the Palestinian Territory, describing them as illegal and illegitimate.
