JEDDAH, June 29, 2026 (WAFA) – The State of Palestine, represented by its Permanent Delegate to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ambassador Hadi Shibli, took part in an event organized by the OIC General Secretariat to mark World Environment Day 2026, observed annually on June 5 under the theme “Climate Action.”
The event was attended by Senior Advisor Naseem Al-Zaanin and Second Secretary Athar Omari.
The Palestinian delegation emphasized the importance of World Environment Day as an international platform to raise awareness of growing environmental challenges, particularly climate change, which it said poses a serious threat to environmental, economic, and social security worldwide.
It stressed Palestine’s commitment, despite exceptional challenges, to contributing to international efforts to protect the environment and promote climate action in line with sustainable development goals and principles of environmental justice. It also called for increased international cooperation, technology transfer, and support for developing countries to help them adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The delegation further highlighted that the environment in Palestine faces compounded risks due to Israeli occupation, including destruction of agricultural land, uprooting of trees, pollution of water and soil resources, and restrictions on access to natural resources, in addition to the effects of blockades and repeated attacks. It said these practices negatively affect Palestinians’ health, food security, and ability to achieve sustainable development.
The participation reflects Palestine’s continued engagement in regional and international environmental initiatives and its active role within the OIC in supporting policies aimed at protecting the environment and preserving the planet.
