HEBRON, June 29, 2026 (WAFA) – Israeli forces on Monday began installing a roof over the open courtyard of the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, a move Palestinian officials say is intended to alter the site's character. They also destroyed murals in the village of Al-Tabaqa, near the town of Dura, south of Hebron.
Munjed Al-Jaabari, director of the Ibrahimi Mosque, told WAFA that Israeli forces brought suspended steel beams into the mosque compound using heavy machinery to cover the open courtyard. He described the work as a serious violation of the mosque's sanctity and historical character, saying it infringes on freedom of worship, provokes Muslim worshippers, and forms part of a broader pattern of Israeli measures targeting the mosque, Hebron's Old City, and the surrounding area.
In a separate incident, Israeli forces entered Al-Tabaqa village and damaged murals depicting Palestinian martyrs and national figures.
According to WAFA's correspondent, soldiers partially demolished the murals before forcing local residents to bring equipment and complete the demolition themselves. The murals featured images of Shadi Abu Ghazaleh, Basel al-Araj, Naji al-Ali, and Ghassan Kanafani.
