RAMALLAH, April 11, 2026 (WAFA) – The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem called on Christian community to participate in the celebration of “Holy Saturday” at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in occupied Jerusalem.
In a statement, the Patriarchate said that gathering around the Holy Sepulchre on this day embodies the message of our forefathers and preserves the spirit of the Holy City. It added that receiving the light emanating from Jerusalem and embraced by the world is a sign of life.
The statement added, "This light, this flame passed from hand to hand, bears witness to our presence in our Holy City, our adherence to our heritage, and our unwavering faith," expressing hope for peace and justice to prevail throughout the world.
Israeli occupation forces had closed the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for 40 days, preventing prayers there, citing security pretexts.
Christian churches that follow the Eastern Orthodox calendar celebrate Holy Fire, which precedes Easter Sunday.
