$2M agreement signed to provide emergency water needs for Gaza

RAMALLAH, February 3, 2025 (WAFA) – Following the signing of a $2 million agreement to provide emergency water needs for Gaza, the Chairman of the Water Authority, Ziad Mimi, stressed on Monday that this agreement is a crucial step in the emergency relief phase.

He made these remarks during the signing ceremony of the support agreement on Monday with the Director of the United Nations Development Program, Sarah Poole, in the presence of the World Bank's Country Director for the West Bank and Gaza, Stephen Emblad.

He said the government seeks to provide humanitarian and service needs to alleviate the suffering and real tragedy experienced by citizens as a result of the Israeli aggression and the massive destruction it left behind.

Mimi stressed the importance of partnership and effective cooperation to provide the basic and necessary needs to secure clean and safe water for citizens in light of the great challenges of displacement, systematic destruction and interruption of services, appreciating the role of the World Bank in providing the required support through the accompanying works project at this stage.

For his part, Emblad stressed the importance of working at this stage to alleviate the water crisis experienced by citizens in the Gaza Strip and the importance of cooperation and partnership to support the priorities of emergency needs that contribute to providing water and reducing the risks of sewage.

Meanwhile, Poole confirmed the readiness to immediately implement the terms of the agreement, pointing out the importance of these interventions and their role in reducing the challenges facing the Gaza Strip.

The agreement includes the supply of eight water tanker trucks with a capacity of 10 cubic meters each, in addition to providing chlorine to sterilize the water to ensure its safety, supplying and installing four water filling points.

It will also provide daily water transport services by the private sector for a period of six months, with an estimated delivery of 450 cubic meters per day, noting that these works will be concentrated in the northern Gaza Strip.

This project was funded by the World Bank within the Water Security Program - Accompanying Works for the Construction of the Central Desalination Plant in Gaza.
