SAO PAULO, Monday, February 20, 2023 (WAFA) – At least 36 people were killed, while hundred others were displaced, in torrential rain that trigged floods and landslides in Brazil's Sao Paulo state, according to Brazilian authorities.
The Brazilian government said that at least 35 people were killed in the town of Sao Sebastiao.
It said in a statement that 228 people have now become displaced, while 338 others were evaccuated from coastal regions north of São Paulo.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said he would visit the affected areas on Monday, while sending his condolences on Twitter.
"We are going to bring together all levels of government and, with the solidarity of society, treat the wounded, look for the missing, restore highways, power connections and telecommunications in the region," da Silva said in a tweet.
Last year, more than 230 people were killed due to the torrential rain in the city of Petrópolis.
