UPDATE: Israeli police attack Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah protesting Israel’s escalated attacks against them

JERUSALEM, Tuesday, May 18, 2021 (WAFA) – Israeli police today violently quelled Palestinians protesting in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem against Israeli police and settler mobs' escalated attacks against them, according to witnesses.

Israeli police fired a barrage of tear gas canisters and stun grenades towards protesters in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, causing many to suffocate due to tear gas inhalation.

Forces further sprayed residents, their cars, and homes with wastewater.

Israeli forces also violently assaulted protesters near Bab al-Amoud, severely beating them and spraying skunk water on them, which resulted in many getting injured and suffocated.

According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 25 Palestinians were injured with rubber-coated steel bullets and stun grenades, in addition to many suffocation cases, during the ongoing clashes in Shaikh Jarrah and Bab al-Amoud areas in occupied Jerusalem.

It said that eight people were taken to the hospital, whereas six others were treated at the scene.

Tensions have been running high in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem over the past month as Israeli settlers and police escalated their attacks against Palestinian residents following a court order for the forcible expulsion of Palestinian families in the area. The Israeli Supreme Court later delayed a hearing on an appeal.
