Newspapers Review: Israeli army suppression of Palestinian protests, corona pandemic highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, March 13, 2021 (WAFA) – The Israeli army suppression of the peaceful Palestinian protests against its occupation and settlement activities in the occupied territories as well as the latest with the corona pandemic were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The three papers said dozens of Palestinians were hurt in the Israeli army crackdown on the protests in various parts of the West Bank and printed pictures of the protests and the confrontations with the Israeli occupation soldiers.

Al-Quds daily said the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem intends to build a memorial for Israeli soldiers killed in the 1967 war in the Palestinian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, as well as a Jewish religious school amidst strong protests from the community members who fear this step means taking over their homes and property and displacing more Palestinian families.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily said Israeli occupation forces attacked Palestinian Muslim worshippers near Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s old city, while al-Ayyam daily said Israel, once again, prevented many Palestinians from the West Bank from accessing Al-Aqsa Mosque to perform the Friday prayers and turned them back at its gates.

Al-Quds said more than 40,000 Muslims attended the Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa despite Israeli restrictions and harassment of worshippers.

The main front-page story in al-Ayyam daily focused on the corona pandemic and said 22 people died of the disease yesterday and 2309 new cases were recorded, including 532 in Hebron and 351 in Nablus in the West Bank. It said the Ministry of Health denied that it was losing control over the pandemic.

It quoted Palestinian official Nabil Shaath saying that there is an international consensus that will allow Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem to vote in the upcoming Palestinian legislative elections at post offices in the city.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestinians inside Israel, but mainly in Umm al-Fahem and Jaljoulia, demonstrated against rise in violence in their communities and Israeli police apathy toward this phenomenon.

Al-Quds quoted Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi saying that Jordan did not allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fly over Jordanian airspace on his way to Abu Dhabi.
