RAMALLAH, Sunday, March 07, 2021 (WAFA) – Kamal Shakhra, head of the coronavirus file in the Ministry of Health, said today that a total of 800 infections from new mutations of coronavirus, most notably the variant first discovered in Britain, have been recorded in Palestine from randomly selected samples taken over the past few weeks.
He told official Voice of Palestine radio that most infections with the British mutant have come from Israel, and that patients would typically start to develop serious symptoms such as acute pneumonia after a maximum of five days from the date of infection.
Shakhra attributed the recent lockdowns of multiple West Bank provinces to the high number of infections and the aggressive spread of new mutations that have put the entire health system at stake.
He said the health sector in Palestine is currently working at its maximum capacity around the clock, warning about possible disruptions in the health system due to the rapid spread of new mutations and the acute symptoms that accompany them, which require more admissions to hospitals already operating at maximum capacity.
