Newspapers Review: Surge in coronavirus cases, injuries from Israeli army crackdown on protests focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, February 27, 2021 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published in the occupied territories highlighted in their edition published today the surge in coronavirus cases in Palestine as well as the injuries caused in the Israeli army crackdown on peaceful anti-occupation, anti-settlements protests in the occupied territories, particularly the injuries among children.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida dailies made the surge in corona cases their main front-page story and said that 11 people have died of the disease yesterday while 1555 new cases were recorded in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Al-Ayyam said three deaths and 562 new corona cases were recorded in occupied East Jerusalem over two days.

The third daily, al-Quds, also highlighted the coronavirus issue but made the Israeli army crackdown on the protests as its main front-page story and said that two children, one of them critical, were among those injured when the soldiers opened fire at the peaceful anti-occupation, anti-settlements protests.

The critical injury was caused by army gunfire while the boy was walking in Safa village, near Ramallah.

The other two dailies also highlighted the army crackdown on the protests, one of them was in Hebron marking the 27th anniversary for the Ibrahimi mosque massacre of Muslim worshippers at the hand of an Israeli settler.

The dailies also said that Israeli police attacked a protest in the Arab town of Umm al-Fahem inside Israel against government apathy toward rise in violence and crime in Arab communities in Israel, assaulting and detaining some of the protesters.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted remarks by the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, at the Security Council in which he said, among other things, that the upcoming Palestinian elections are an important step toward unifying the Palestinian people.

Al-Quds said in a headline that Washington wants to strengthen its relationship with the Palestinian leadership.

It also said that Jordan and Palestine have agreed on a new mechanism for West Bank travelers leaving across the bridge crossing straight to Amman airport.

On the Palestinian elections, al-Quds quoted the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine saying that they joined the elections because the Legislative Council and the National Council are a space for political engagement.
