Newspapers Review: Government decisions, Israeli measures, and US-Palestinian relations focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, December 29, 2020 (WAFA) – Each of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today in the occupied territories highlighted a different topic on its front page.

Al-Ayyam daily highlighted the Palestinian government's decision to merge, incorporate, or terminate more than 25 non-ministerial official institutions operating in the West Bank. It said the decision was made to improve the provision of services, raise the level of coordination, prevent replication, and cut expenses.

Al-Quds daily focused on the Israeli measures in the occupied Palestinian territories and said that Israel detained 17 Palestinians, including two female Birzeit University students, demolished or issued demolition orders against several Palestinian-owned structures, and prevented Muslim worshippers from reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. At the same time, Israeli settlers continued their un-checked rampage in the occupied West Bank.

The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, highlighted the letter by 17 US churches and Christian agencies to US president-elect Joe Biden calling on him to reengage with the Palestinian Authority and to ensure accountability for Israel after he takes office in order to remedy the mistakes of the outgoing US administration under Donald Trump.

Each of the three dailies reported on all these topics somewhere on their front page, along with the latest developments and figures of the coronavirus pandemic in Palestine, the region, and the world.

Al-Quds said 25 Palestinian farmers were able, for the first time in 46 years, to reach their lands in al-Qaoun plains in the northern Jordan Valley after an Israeli court finally issued an order to get the intruding Israeli settlers out of the area and to give the land back to its lawful Palestinian owners.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported on this topic.

Al-Ayyam also said that Palestinian factions in Gaza were getting ready to hold a joint military drill and therefore the coastal road was closed as well as other areas.

It said a Moroccan delegation is in Israel since Sunday to discuss reopening the liaison office. It will be later followed by a larger delegation as part of the Israeli-Moroccan normalization plan.

Al-Quds quoted Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh saying that normalization with Israel emboldens the occupation, forces migration in the Arab world, and leads to division and internal strife.
