Arab League chief condemns Somaliland visit to occupied Jerusalem as violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and international law

CAIRO, June 16, 2026 (WAFA) – Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned the visit of the President of the so-called Somaliland region of Somalia, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, to occupied Jerusalem and the opening of a building referred to as an “embassy.”

Aboul Gheit affirmed in a statement on Tuesday that this step is null and void, has no legal effect, and constitutes a desperate attempt to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

He stressed that this step violates the United Nations Charter and international law and constitutes a provocation to the Somali people, the Arab nation, as well as the African and Islamic worlds, amid the crimes committed by the occupation authorities against the Palestinian people.

He called on officials in the Somaliland region of Somalia to reconsider this policy and not to involve Somaliland's future and the interests of its people in arrangements that serve external agendas rather than the interests of the Somali people.

He also urged them to avoid linking Somaliland region with the interests of the Israeli occupation authorities, whose policies seek to exploit divisions among states, undermine regional security, and expand their military and political influence.

For his part, Spokesperson for Arab League Secretary-General Jamal Rushdi affirmed the Arab League’s full solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia and its firm support for its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, noting that the Arab League Council had previously considered, in its extraordinary session held on December 28, 2025, Israeli moves with the Somaliland region as a threat to Arab national security and to peace, security, and stability in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Horn of Africa.

He added that the Secretary-General continues his efforts to mobilize a unified Arab, African, and international stance to confront these moves and safeguard Somalia’s sovereignty and regional stability.
