Newspapers Review: Israeli demolitions, coronavirus highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, July 23, 2020 (WAFA) – Two issues dominated the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today: ongoing Israeli demolition and orders of demolition of Palestinian structures in the occupied territories, and the fast-spreading coronavirus pandemic in Palestine.

Al-Quds said Israel demolished a Palestinian house in an East Jerusalem neighborhood and issued demolition orders against several other structures elsewhere in the occupied territories.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported as well on the demolitions but led on their front page with the coronavirus and said that two people have died in the Hebron district and 356 new cases were recorded yesterday in Palestine.

Al-Quds also reported on the coronavirus cases and added that there is a concern in East Jerusalem due to the rise in the number of cases in the occupied city, which has reached more than 2000 cases since June.

It said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced the arrival of 18 shipments of medical equipment through the United Nations to help the Palestinians deal with the pandemic.

Shtayyeh also met with UN Special Coordinator Nickolay Mladenov and discussed with him the latest political developments, said the paper.

Al-Ayyam quoted Mladenov warning during a session at the UN Security Council of the deterioration of the situation in the occupied territories due to the coronavirus measures and Israeli occupation.

It said Israeli police raided and seized documents of two Palestinian cultural centers in East Jerusalem and held three of their directors for a while before releasing two of them.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted the official in charge of the Anti-Wall, Anti-Settlements Commission, Walid Assaf, saying that seven cases of land forgeries by Israeli settlers were exposed and dealt with last month.
