Newspapers Review: Coronavirus toll in Palestine, Abbas-Sisi phone call focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Monday, July 20, 2020 (WAFA) – The rising number of coronavirus cases and deaths in Palestine, as well as the phone call between Presidents Mahmoud Abbas and Abdul Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt, were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The papers said three people died of coronavirus yesterday in the West Bank and 465 new cases were confirmed as the Palestinian government continues to take action against violators of the health requirements.

Al-Quds said 101 new cases were recorded in East Jerusalem with a significant drop in the number of tests conducted.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida made the Abbas-Sisi phone call its main front-page story and said that Egyptian President Sisi said Egypt always stand on the side of Palestinian right.

Al-Ayyam said Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri is going to stress the firm Egyptian stand in support of the Palestinian cause when he arrives in Ramallah for a meeting with President Abbas.

Al-Quds said the Jordanian monarch, King Abdullah, has reiterated his opposition to any Israeli annexation of occupied Palestinian land, and his firm support for the Palestinian cause.

The paper also said that the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem intends to build a large wheel across from the Old City of Jerusalem, as well as built an employment office, both in the occupied section of the city, intended to serve Israel’s plan for the settlements-based greater Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli settlers torched hundreds of olive trees and a large area of agricultural land in the Nablus district in the north of the West Bank.

It said Israel has remanded the Palestinian Authority’s Jerusalem governor Adnan Ghaith, arrested yesterday, for 24 hours.

It quoted Foreign Minister Riyad Malki saying that the International Criminal Court may decide to start an investigation of Israeli crimes against the Palestinians at any time.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the South African parliament said Israel’s annexation plan of Palestinian land reminds them of the apartheid period in their country.

It said Palestinians in Bethlehem held a sit-in in support of sick prisoners in Israeli jails.
