Newspapers Review: France, EU Reports Dominate Dailies

RAMALLAH, January 18, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Wednesday focused on the French report on Israel’s discriminatory water policies and a report by the European Union condemning Israeli actions to annex East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds prime headline highlighted a report by the French parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, which described Israel’s water policies in the occupied Palestinian Territory as a form of apartheid.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida main front page story featured Israeli media news on EU report that called to enhance the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) control in occupied East Jerusalem and to pressure Israel to change its policies in the West Bank.

The newspaper also said that the report recommended forming a black list of violent Israeli settlers in East Jerusalem to prevent them from entering EU state members.

Al-Ayyam reported on its front page that the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem is speeding up construction of a new road that will link Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem after seizing 117 dunums of Palestinian-owned land in the city.

The daily printed a picture of a Palestinian family in Bethlehem checking the damage to its house after the Israeli army ransacked its residence claiming it was looking for a “wanted” person.

Al-Quds focused on Jordan’s King Abdullah’s meeting with US President Barack Obama in Washington, where both leaders discussed the Arab-Israeli conflict and the situation in Syria.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a picture of President Mahmoud Abbas awarding Israeli human rights attorney, Felicia Langer, the Medal of Excellence in the German capital, Berlin.

Al-Quds editorial addressed the British potential role in pushing forward European and international efforts to end the Israeli occupation and settlements in light of Abbas’ recent visit to Britain.
