Newspapers Review: Syria Fails to Meet Arab League Ultimatum

RAMALLAH, December 5, 2011 (WAFA) – Monday’s issues of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on different issues, mainly the situation in Syria after the government failed to meet the new Arab League ultimatum set for Sunday.

Al-Ayyam’s main front page story reported that the Syrian regime ignored the new Arab League ultimatum  to allow its observers in Syria to monitor the country's unrest, in order to avoid imposing more sanctions on Syrian officials.

The daily’s prime headline also reported on the death of 40 Syrian civilians on Sunday.

Al-Quds highlighted reports by diplomatic and intelligence sources indicating a quiet, gradual drop in Hamas presence in Syria, in anticipation of the unknown future of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The reports said the rate of Hamas officials leaving Syria increased after the Arab League imposed sanctions on senior officials, and that only  tens of Hamas officials and families are currently in Syria after they were estimated at hundreds, despite Hamas denial.

Al-Hayat a-Jadida reported on its front page on clashes that broke out between Palestinians and Israeli forces in the village of Qalandia, south of Ramallah, where Israeli forces gave a Palestinian man a deadline for Monday to evict part of his house, which will be confiscated to build part of the Apartheid Wall on its site.

The three papers published pictures of Israeli soldiers carrying away an elderly Palestinian man who attempted to stop Israeli bulldozers from razing his land to build a part of the Apartheid Wall on his property.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported on a meeting between representatives of Hamas and Fatah in Gaza on Sunday, with both factions stressing their commitment to implementing the reconciliation agreement.

Al-Quds editorial discussed ways for Israel to end its rising international isolation, such as halting settlement activities and practices against the Palestinians, ending the blockade on Gaza, and apologizing to Turkey.
