Malaysian Aid Mission Gets Tumultuous Welcome in Khan Younis

GAZA, August 15, 2010 (WAFA) - The Kelab Putera 1Malaysia and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society humanitarian mission to Gaza was given a tumultuous welcome in Khan Younis Sunday, Malaysian news agency (Bernama) reported.

Three hundred heads of households, including single mothers, received essential items and Aidilfitri clothes at Al-Amal City Centre of Ability Development.

However, the ceremony was disrupted when a group of people who did not register as recipients with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society also made a beeline for the aid.

During the presentation of baju kurung and baju Melayu to some 500 Palestinian children, parents jostled for a pair of the dress for their children.

The commotion caused Malaysian volunteers, including singer Fauziah Latiff, to speak at the top of their voice to calm the crowd and urged them to be patient.

Meanwhile, another group of Malaysian volunteers led by Kelab Putera 1Malaysia president Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim presented aid to disabled and trauma children at the Khan Younis Hospital.

Sixty-seven Malaysian volunteers are taking part in the humanitarian mission.

1Malaysia Kelab Putera humanitarian mission is expected to leave Gaza tomorrow via the Rafah border point, its leader Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said.

He said the decision to leave earlier was because the group had succeeded in giving assistance to more than 2,000 families in Gaza.

They managed to hand over medicines to five hospitals and clinics in Gaza City, Jabalyah, Der Al-Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah since they arrived here on August 9.

The mission's Operations Director from the Malaysian Red Crescent Society Nasir Khan Abdul Rahman said all the 67 Malaysian volunteers would exit earlier for security reason.

The group, accompanied by 35 doctors of various races from Gaza, entered the conflict area via the Rafah border
